National Council Members express support for President’s efforts to resume negotiations

Members of the National Council expressed in a joint statement issued on Friday their support for the President of the Republic’s efforts to resume negotiations aimed at achieving a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus problem, following the conclusion of their meeting at the Presidential Palace.

As stated, during their meeting today with the President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, the members of the National Council were briefed on the latest developments in the Cyprus issue since the National Council’s last meeting on 22 June 2026.

"The National Council welcomes the UN Secretary-General’s visit to Cyprus, which stands as tangible proof of his personal commitment to efforts to resolve the Cyprus issue. The National Council also welcomes the appointment of Mr Rafaelle Fitto, Executive Vice-President of the European Commission, as the EU Special Representative for the Cyprus issue,” it said.

“Respecting the long-standing positions of the political forces, the members of the National Council express their support for the efforts of the President of the Republic to resume negotiations aimed at achieving a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus problem,” the statement concludes.
