Christiana Iacovidou: Nicosia's hotels fully prepared for the Cyprus Presidency of the EU Council

Nicosia's hotels are fully prepared to welcome the delegates who will arrive in Cyprus in view of the country's Presidency of the Council of the European Union, and have even undergone serious renovations.

This was emphasised, among other things, in an interview in the December issue of Cyprus Hotel Association (Pasyxe's) newsletter 'Xenodochos' by the President of Pasyxe Nicosia, Christiana Iacovidou, who noted that "our goal is for the institution to succeed for the good of our country and for the conference participants to leave with the best impressions."

At the same time, Iacovidou also underlines the need for a comprehensive strategy for Nicosia in order to increase the tourist flow to the capital, so that hotels can operate smoothly.

Specifically, when asked how the capital's hotels are preparing for the Cyprus Presidency of the EU, she stated that "the hotels in Nicosia are fully prepared to welcome the delegates. They have undertaken significant renovations for this purpose. And let us not forget that this is the second time we are hosting the Cyprus Presidency (the first was in the second half of 2012) so we are more experienced in the requirements of this institution."

"Our goal is for this institution to succeed for the good of our country and for the conference attendees to leave with the best impressions," she highlighted.

Regarding the actions that need to be taken in order for Nicosia to attract more tourism, Iacovidou said that "a strategy must be developed involving all Partners for at least the next five years. New infrastructure must be created and existing infrastructure must be utilised to develop conference, cultural and so-called weekend break tourism to attract tourists of alternative interest."

She continued that the old city must also be beautified/cleaned and a vision must be created regarding its utilisation.

Regarding the tourist season, the President of PASYXE Nicosia noted that 2025 closed at the same levels as 2024, while 2026 is expected to be a better year due to the Cyprus Presidency.

Regarding new investments in Nicosia in the tourism sector more broadly, Iacovidou said that "as far as I know, the existing hotels have all invested money in renovations due to the upcoming Cyprus Presidency in the next six months."

"Of course, permits have been granted for new units, which are expected to operate within the next five years. But again, a strategy must be created for Nicosia, in order to increase the tourist flow to Nicosia, so that all hotels can operate smoothly," she concluded.
