National Bank of Greece (Cyprus) has announced the appointment of Michalis Athanasiou to the position of Chief Business Officer, strengthening its management team in a period of dynamic growth and strategic upgrading of the Group's presence in Cyprus.
Athanasiou has extensive experience in senior management positions, with a significant career in large banking organisations in Cyprus, Australia and Luxembourg, the Bank's announcement notes.
He has managed critical transformation projects, capital enhancement projects and complex financings. At the same time, Athanasiou has led a series of successful ventures in international markets and in highly regulated environments, with significant experience in developing business with domestic and international counterparties.
As Group Chief Risk Officer of Bank of Cyprus, he contributed significantly to the process of raising €1 billion in new capital in 2014 and to the subsequent stabilization and strengthening of its balance sheet.
Subsequently, he managed the bank's corporate portfolio for large and international businesses as Executive Director - Global Corporate Banking & Markets.
At Eurobank Private Bank Luxembourg, both from the position of Senior General Manager – Head of Business and then as CEO, he achieved a significant increase in profitability, strengthening the Bank's position in the highly competitive sector of wealth management.
