Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment Maria Panayiotou highlighted the importance of cooperation between Cyprus and Jordan, particularly in countering wildfires and drought, during her recent meeting with her Jordanian counterpart, Khaled Hanifat.
Panayiotou said that the two countries face common challenges and obtain complementary capabilities and they could play a decisive part in the sustainable growth of the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East, a Ministry press release said.
Hanifat and Panayiotou met on Sunday, 30 Novemeber, on the occasion of the Jordanians' visit to Cyprus, during which he attended the 18th Conference of the Regional Committee for the Middle East of the World Organisation for Animal Health, in Larnaca.
Panayiotou thanked Jordan for its meaningful assistance to counter the latest wildfires in Cyprus. They also discussed water resources, as both countries are affected by drought, and exchanged experiences from measures that both countries have applied to counter the issue, such as water recycling systems, disalination and smart watering systems.
In the framework of a Memorandum of Cooperation from back in 2018, they discussed the enhancement of cooperation. The Jordanians presented their advanced infrastructure for the production of vaccines, which create new prospects o technological and commercial cooperation, the Ministry said.
The two Ministers decided to further enhance the bilateral cooperation through the establishment of a Joint Contact Group for the implementation of the Memorandum, as well as by encouraging synergies between businesses from both countries.
