The University of Cyprus (UCY) is listed among the world’s top universities in eight academic subjects, according to the 2025 results of the Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS) published by the ShanghaiRanking Consultancy.
The University said in a press release that it is placed among the leading institutions worldwide in Automation & Control (101–150), Education (201–300), Psychology (201–300), Electrical & Electronic Engineering (201–300), Management (301–400), Telecommunication Engineering (301–400), Environmental Science & Engineering (401–500) and Physics (401–500).
It further added that "this subject-based distinction aligns with the University’s overall standing in the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) 2025, where the University of Cyprus is placed in the 801–900 band and remains the only university in Cyprus included in the list."
"Its combined presence in both the overall and the subject-based Shanghai rankings reinforces the University’s reputation and highlights its strategic position on the international academic map," the press release said.
"These results point to the University’s sustained investment in research excellence, high-quality teaching and international cooperation. As the country’s first public university, the University of Cyprus continues to enhance its global footprint, support leading researchers, and offer its students contemporary academic programmes with a strong research dimension and meaningful societal impact," it noted.
"‘Rankings such as ShanghaiRanking traditionally ‘favour’ long-established universities with centuries of history, which count Nobel laureates and other major distinctions among their staff and alumni. The inclusion of a relatively young institution such as the University of Cyprus is therefore an achievement in itself," UCY Rector, Professor Tasos Christofides, pointed out.
"International rankings are an important communication tool for presenting the breadth of work carried out by our academic community. The strongest confirmation of the University’s quality, however, comes from the work of its people — work with clear societal relevance — as well as from the calibre and contribution of its students and graduates," he added.
