China donated €6,000 to the Committee on Missing Persons (CMP), bringing China's total financial support to the CMP since 2019 to €26,000.
A press release by CMP on Thursday says that the Committee acknowledges with appreciation the contribution of €6,000 from the People’s Republic of China, received on 26 August.
The contribution, the press release reads, will assist the Committee’s goal to identify and return the remains of missing individuals to their families in 2026, helping to bring an end to the long-standing uncertainty endured by relatives for many years.
The Committee on Missing Persons in Cyprus was established in April 1981 under the auspices of the United Nations by an agreement between the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities, following a call to establish a mechanism made in two UN General Assembly resolutions.
The CMP Project on the Exhumation, Identification and Return of Remains of Missing Persons in Cyprus became operational in 2006, and the European Union continues to be the project’s main financial contributor.
So far, 1,081 missing persons from both Cypriot communities have been identified and returned to their families for dignified burials.
