Larnaca to host 2026 Thalassa Marine Sciences Conference

Following the success of Thalassa 2022 Conference and Thalassa 2024 Marine Science Conference, the Cyprus Marine and Maritime Institute (CMMI) is co-organising the third regional conference: THALASSA 2026 – Marine Sciences Conference with the PUREEF-Y Project.

Supported by the European Union, it will take place in Larnaca between 21 and 22 May 2026.

As noted by the organisers, "THALASSA 2026 will create a platform for knowledge exchange by bringing together marine experts and stakeholders from academic and research institutes, the industry, NGOs, and the public sector who will present the latest interdisciplinary innovations and state-of-the-art development that bridge scientific, technological, social and policy perspectives."

The event will also address and propose science-based solutions to the challenges faced by marine and coastal environments in the Mediterranean region. The conference will also provide networking opportunities for participants to discuss current and potential collaborations, CMMI and the PUREEF-Y Project note.

Established in 2019, CMMI is a Centre of Excellence for marine and maritime research, innovation and technology development.

CMMI’s vision is to drive sustainable Blue Growth by addressing the needs of industry and society within the spectrum of the marine and maritime sectors. It has ten Research and Innovation Centres that are involved in marine technology, marine robotics, maritime digitalisation, marine observation, marine and coastal ecosystems, marine biotechnology and aquaculture, the maritime human element, marine cultural heritage, marine and maritime policies and regional cooperation.

PUREEF-Y is proposed as a transformational Coordination and Support action capable of enhancing the science and innovation capacity of CMMI, Cyprus and Europe in the sectors of chemical oceanography and marine ecology, focusing on Climate Change and other anthropogenic stressors.

It will contribute to closing the gap between actors from the EU Widening Area and strong innovators of the EU through knowledge transfer and exchange of best practices between research institutions, thus transforming CMMI into a leading institution in marine ecology and oceanography at the international level.
