GOLD New Issue- Shipping: An ocean of opportunity

In the new issue of GOLD coming out on Sunday, 21 September, the Cyprus Marine and Maritime Institute presents: An Ocean of Opportunity (click here). In the annual shipping issue, we examine the present state of the industry and chart what comes next.

The sea represents so many things: commerce and connection, myth and machinery, a highway for goods and ideas, a frontier of risk and endless, blue ambition. Today, the global maritime industry finds itself in the spotlight once again as geopolitical upheavals, technological disruption, decarbonisation, clean fuels, crewing issues, cyber risk and the rise of the so-called ‘dark fleet’ have brought it to a decisive moment. The tides are high – and so are the stakes. Shipping now operates in a world where political unpredictability is the norm as conflicts, sanctions and re-routed corridors reshape trade flows, sometimes overnight. At the same time, financial markets remain skittish, precisely when the sector must mobilise unprecedented investment in cleaner fuels, alternative propulsion, energy-efficiency technologies and port infrastructure. Tariffs and broader protectionist moves have added another layer of uncertainty, chilling capital expenditure and complicating long-term planning. Yet the industry’s task is unchanged: to keep trade moving safely, efficiently and more sustainably.

Cyprus sits at the heart of these currents. With an EU-approved tonnage tax, a high-quality flag and one of Europe’s leading third-party ship management centres, the island is both a stakeholder and standard-bearer. Maritime affairs are not only part of the island’s story; they are now central to how it creates value, projects influence and plays an active role in international affairs. The local shipping industry enhances Cyprus’ standing as an influential EU member state and a credible global maritime player –keeping pace with the major powers as regards technology and innovation. In this industry, there is no other way to survive.

In this cover story, several key figures examine the present state of the industry and chart what comes next:

  • Arsenio Dominguez, Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO)
  • Karin Orsel, President of European Shipowners | ECSA
  • Thomas A. Kazakos, Secretary-General of the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS)
  • Marina Hadjimanolis, Shipping Deputy Minister
  • Andreas Neophytou, President of the Cyprus Shipping Chamber (CSC)
  •  Alexandros Josephides, Director-General, of the Cyprus Shipping Chamber (CSC)
  •  Polys V. Hajioannou, Vice-President of the Cyprus Union of Shipowners (CUS)
  •  Zenonas Apostolou, Chairman of the Cyprus Ports Authority (CPA)

Completing the picture, four ship’s captains from the below companies, remind us plainly and powerfully why the ocean may be unforgiving but the story of shipping is, above all, a human one.
