The total registrations of vehicles increased by 0.8% to 34,668 in January-August 2025, from 34,391 in January-August 2024, according to data published by CySTAT.
Passenger saloon cars increased to 26,961 from 26,902 in January-August 2024, recording a rise of 0.2%. Of the total passenger saloon cars, 10,373 or 38.5% were new and 16,588 or 61.5% were used cars. Rental cars in particular recorded a rise of 27.2% to 4,044.
The share of petrol powered passenger cars to the total of this category of vehicles decreased in January-August 2025 to 43.2% (from 50.1% in the corresponding period of the preceding year) and that of diesel-powered cars to 8.5% in 2025 from 9.9% in 2024. On the other hand, the share of electric cars rose from 3.3% in 2024 to 4.8% in 2025 and of hybrid cars from 36.8% to 43.6%.
Coaches and buses registered in January-August 2025 decreased to 101, from 110 in the same period of 2024. Goods conveyance vehicles increased by 2% to 3,935 in January-August 2025, compared to 3,858 in January-August 2024. In particular, rental vehicles increased by 10% to 187 and light goods vehicles by 2.6% to 3,152, while road tractors (units of trailers) decreased by 9.2% to 138 and heavy goods vehicles by 1.1% to 458.
Mopeds of less than 50cc registered in January-August 2025 fell to 155 compared to 535 in the corresponding period of the previous year. Motorcycles over 50cc increased by 22.2% to 3,094 in January-August 2025, compared to 2,532 in the same period of 2024.
In August 2025, the total registrations of vehicles numbered 3,468, recording a decrease of 1.7% compared to 3,527 in August 2024. Passenger saloon cars registered a rise of 1% to 2,803, from 2,776 in August 2024.
