EuroBasket to benefit the Cyprus economy by up to €17.7m, more than covering hosting costs

Cyprus is already in the global spotlight ahead of FIBA Euro Basketball 2025, with leading international media highlighting Limassol as one of the most important cities to host the top European basketball event, from 28 August to 4 September.

FIBA, through a special tribute, presented the renovated Spyros Kyprianou Sports Centre and characterised Limassol as the institution's new reference point, emphasising that Cyprus is making a historic debut as a tournament co-organiser.

American ESPN includes Limassol in the list of cities that will host games, alongside traditional basketball powers such as Spain and Germany, thus giving Cyprus the same recognition as strong sports destinations.

The international reach of the event is also reflected in the coverage by major Spanish media outlets such as El País and AS, which extensively report on the matches that will take place in Limassol and the presence of top teams such as Spain, Italy and Greece.

At the same time, specialised sports media such as BasketNews and Eurohoops are following both the progress of the Cyprus National Team and the preparations for hosting the group step by step, while in the Balkans, Mozzart Sport recently hosted an extensive interview with the President of Cyprus Basketball Federation (CBF) Andreas Mouzouridess, highlighting how Cyprus managed to turn a seemingly impossible vision into reality.

The country's international visibility is further enhanced by the economic data published in the international press.

According to an analysis by BasketNews, EuroBasket is expected to bring up to €17.7 million to the Cypriot economy, more than covering the cost of hosting, while many foreign media outlets note that the tournament will offer multiple benefits to tourism and the island's promotion abroad.

This is a rare opportunity that highlights Cyprus as an attractive and safe destination for organising large-scale events, linking sporting excellence with tourism development and strengthening the country's image.

In his statements, the President of the CBF, Andreas Mouzourides, noted characteristically to Mozzart Sport, "You must have big dreams and work beyond the usual limits, no matter how small you are."

Referring to the readiness of the infrastructure, he pointed out, "Completing the renovation of the arena ahead of schedule allows us to focus on the high level of organisation that EuroBasket deserves and the image we want to present internationally."

Cyprus did not just win the right to host a major sporting event. It won the wager of international recognition, global visibility and long-term investment in the country's brand. EuroBasket 2025 is a turning point for Cyprus, transforming it into a recognisable player on the international map of sporting events.
