In the new issue of GOLD coming out on Sunday, 17 August, the University of Nicosia presents: Raising The Bar (click here). In the annual legal issue, we examine how the legal profession is adapting to more reform, greater regulation and the power of AI.
A year after receiving solemn promises that the e-Justice system would finally be up and running, the legal profession remains frustrated by the lack of progress and continues to call ever more loudly for justice to be delivered on time, while demonstrating that it is increasingly open to the possibilities that the evolution of AI are likely to bring.
If there is one certainty that emerges from the interviews in this month’s cover story, it is the profession’s thirst for change and the depth of wisdom that sustains the local legal cluster. Yet this appetite for renewal is not always reflected in the tempo adopted by the public sector.
That said, while some things remain stubbornly static, others have changed drastically. Client priorities have evolved: legal advisors now need to be technically knowledgeable, proactive, accessible and digitally fluent, while also providing greater transparency and predictability in costs.
Meanwhile, the eternal struggle to maintain public confidence in the legal system continues. High-profile controversies, coupled with the two judgments against Cyprus issued in 2025 by the European Court of Human Rights concerning the inadequate handling by public authorities of serious complaints, have further eroded confidence, sparking renewed debate about institutional authority and independence.
And yet, even in this trying climate, lawyers are eager to empower their clients and thrive despite the setbacks. On the pages that follow, we examine how the legal profession is adapting to more reform, greater regulation and the power of AI, through interviews with the Managing Partners of 12 leading local law firms, seven distinguished Legal 500 Next Generation Partners and the President of the Cyprus Bar Association, Michael Vorkas. We also speak to Judge Anna Marcoulli, President of Chamber at the General Court of the European Union and present our updated list of the island’s 80+ leading law firms, ranked in order of the number of lawyers they employ in Cyprus.
