Johanna Rostedt on Swedish design company Bolon’s collaboration with MHV at The Landmark, Nicosia

”The Bolon product used at The Landmark Nicosia, Autograph Collection is from a designer collection by the famous designer and interior architect Patricia Urquoila,” Johanna Rostedt, Head of Global Accounts, Bolon says, also revealing the collaboration was the company’s first big delivery and project in Cyprus.

In an  exclusive interview with CBN, the executive, who visited Cyprus and stayed at the hotel in early December, also describes how the world-leading design company specialising in climate-neutral flooring and rugs approaches its products and services.

How did Bolon’s collaboration with MHV at The Landmark Nicosia, Autograph Collection come about? Is this the company’s first project in Cyprus? Will there be more?

Bolon was recommended as a flooring option by Marriott and introduced to the Eraclis Papachristou - Architectural Office. If not considering small installations, this is the first big delivery and project in Cyprus.

What was the concept behind the flooring used at The Landmark Nicosia, Autograph Collection?

The Bolon product used at The Landmark Nicosia, Autograph Collection is from a designer collection by the famous designer and interior architect Patricia Urquoila. The collection with Patricia Urquoila was launched in 2021 and it is a collaboration. The pattern is an inspiration from the Japanese Sashiko pattern – also called Patricia Urquiola Sashiko. The colour in the guest rooms is Nude Sashiko and as well as in the changing rooms. In the meeting rooms there are two colours, Nude Sashiko and Light Sashiko.

Could you share a few other projects and locations from your portfolio where you have placed Bolon ?

We have done a lot of prestigious projects globally in different fields such hospitality, commercial offices, retail, healthcare and other public space such as schools, museums and airports.

One of the latest projects that we are very proud of is the Zurich new children's hospital, Kinderspital, where Bolon is installed in waiting areas and leisure rooms. It is in total 12,000 m2. Office projects are still our biggest field and, to mention a few, we have delivered the flooring to, for example, the NIKE Headquarters in Europe, both in the Netherlands and London, all together closer to 20,000 m2. From the hospitality sector, we are gaining more and more areas, such as guest rooms. With Marriott, we have a customised product for the new Courtyard by Marriott brand in Europe, and have delivered, for example, to the CBM Berlin City- not only guest rooms but also the lobby and gym. We work with brands like Chanel, Rimowa and BMW in the retail field. One of the big airport projects is the Athens airport, where many of the waiting lounges were delivered with Bolon flooring, over 10,000 m2.

Bolon is known for turning waste material into woven flooring. What materials were used at The Landmark Nicosia, Autograph Collection?

Bolon has since 2015 had its own recycling factory in Ulricehamn Sweden where all Bolon floors are manufactured.

The waste material comes from different sources starting from a waste free production which means that all production waste is reused. We also buy waste from our yarn suppliers, we use old window frames, the chalk in our product is residue and production waste from marble industry. On average every square metre of our flooring consists of 68 % of recycled material and has a bio-based top layer which is the woven part that you can also see. The bio-based material is based on a residue from the paper pulp industry so instead of oil, residue pine oil is the oil source.

Sustainability has been at the core of Bolon’s creations since it was established in 1949. Do you think this gives the company an advantage over its peers, who are only just catching up with it?

Yes, very much so. We have a very strong vision and actions what comes to making sustainable choices with our production and materials throughout the company history. All products are manufactured in our own company in Sweden, raw materials come mostly from very close suppliers in Sweden, then Nordics and Europe. We have 0 % climate impact from the production with renewable energy source, nowadays also from our own solar panels covering the entire roof of the factory and our cooling system is ground cooling. We have always chosen to be one or many steps ahead of legislation and invest in sustainable choices. In December 2025 we launched our Back2Bolon -programme which means that we take back all tiles we ship from the factory globally and reuse the material in our production.

How has the company managed to stay at the top of the high-end flooring market, while also being one of the most sustainable companies?

Bolon has a unique story, culture and history as a Swedish family company. We are a design company at the forefront and identify firstly as a design company that now produces flooring and rugs. Design and sustainability are our core values.

All of Bolon’s products contain 68% waste material, with zero climate impact in every square meter. Can you explain how this is achieved?

As mentioned above, we use post production waste from our factory and from our suppliers, from our chalk supplier, we use industry waste such as old window frames and piping and have managed to turn hard post consumption PVC into soft PVC that can be used in our backing. The top layer is also made from bio-sourced PVC which is based on pine oil that is a residue from the paper pulp industry.

Can you provide a statement on your overall collaboration with MHV and specifically The Landmark Nicosia, Autograph Collection?

The professional teams at both organisations have made everything easy for us as a supplier and the communication has been very nice.
