Sue Dopson: How leadership theory has changed in a volatile world

Dopson, Deputy Dean for People and EDI, Professor of Organisational Behaviour, Saïd Business School, University of Oxford will be exploring this concept and more as one of the esteemed speakers at the upcoming CIM Summit 2024.

She recently talked to CBN about what she will be speaking about at the event and why happenings such as the Summit, taking place in Nicosia on 6 April, are important for the business world.

You will be speaking aboutThe Future of Leadership’ at the upcoming CIM Summit 2024. Without giving too much away, can you reveal a bit more about some of the topics you will be exploring in your address?

I will be exploring how leadership theory has changed and its relevance to the practice of leadership in today’s complex and volatile world. I will draw on recent research that asked leaders from many different sectors what were their greatest challenges and what did they feel they needed to get better at as leaders.

More widely, the theme of the Summit is ‘The Future of Business: Adapting to a Changing Landscape.’ What do you consider to be some of the major upcoming changes to the business landscape and how can companies and individual professionals best prepare for them?

I think some of the major challenges are: ensuring that leaders are curious about their own leadership, what the people they lead want from them to give energy to the organisation and the context in which they lead. Equally important is to explore the nature of leadership work and what practices will most help get the work done.

Further to the above, do you expect some of these changes to impact one of your main areas of expertise, Organisational Behaviour? If yes, in what ways?

Not really. OB specialists of late have always understood that change requires agile leadership. The scale and complexity of leadership work has changed of course.

What are some of the reasons you consider events such as the Summit to be important for the business world to attend and participate in?

Convening conversations with those who have power to impact organisational life and in turn wider society are always helpful. The exchange of ideas about how to navigate the complex world we work in is valuable. However, it’s not what you know but what you do with what you know that is important.

The future of business: Adapting to a changing landscape

The CIM Summit 2024 will have as theme, The Future of Business: Adapting to a Changing Landscape. It will take place on Saturday 6 of April at 08:30 at the Bank of Cyprus Corporate Headquarters (Ayia Paraskevi) in Nicosia.

The Minister of Finance, Makis Keravnos, will address the Summit on behalf of H.E. President of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr. Nicos Christodoulides. The CIM-Cyprus Business School CEO, Yangos Hadjiyannis, will also address the Summit.
