Cypriot-owned Zela Aviation to enhance Skyros' air connectivity

Zela Aviation, owned by Cypriot entrepreneur Andreas Christodoulides, has announced the signing of a strategic partnership with the Municipality of Skyros in Greece, aimed at enhancing the island’s air connectivity and positioning it as an emerging tourism destination in international markets.

Skyros one

This agreement marks Zela Aviation’s third collaboration in Greece in the fields of airport and tourism development, following successful partnerships with the Municipality of Sitia (2022) and the Municipality of Syros (2024). These initiatives reflect the company’s continued commitment to supporting regional growth and maximizing the tourism potential of Greek island, a relevant press release said.

"With more than 19 years of experience in the aviation sector and a strong presence in the UK, Cyprus, and Greece, Zela Aviation brings its global expertise to this promising new collaboration, which aims to support the sustainable tourism development of Skyros," it continued.

Skyros as a tourism destination

Skyros, the largest island of the Sporades, is a hidden gem in the Aegean Sea, renowned for its wild natural beauty, traditional architecture, and rich cultural heritage. From unspoiled beaches and forested landscapes to local gastronomy, folklore traditions, and the famous horses of the island, the island offers a wide range of authentic experiences. From the cobbled streets of Chora to archaeological sites and rare biodiversity, Skyros captivates those in search of serenity and authenticity.

Taking flight with Zela Jet

As part of this cooperation, Zela Jet, the private air charter brand of the Zela Aviation Group, is expected to play a key role in boosting the island’s accessibility through private jet and helicopter services during the 2025–2026 tourism seasons. Founded in 2020, Zela Jet specializes in bespoke charter services across Greece and Europe, catering to discerning travelers who seek flexibility and premium service.

Skyros Airport

Skyros Airport, featuring a 3,002-meter runway, already operates regular flights to and from Athens and is fully equipped to handle larger aircraft and international charter operations. Its strategic location near the port of Linaria and its existing infrastructure make it an ideal hub for expanding the island’s air accessibility.

International promotion and affordable travel options

Zela Aviation will work closely with Skyros Mayor Kyriakos Antonopoulos and local authorities to attract the interest of international travel agents and major airlines for both seasonal and charter operations. The company will also explore partnerships with low-cost carriers to establish regular and affordable routes that can help increase tourist arrivals year-round, the press release also noted.

A partnership with vision

Zela Aviation President Andreas Christodoulides stated, “We are excited about our new partnership with the Municipality of Skyros. The island offers a remarkable combination of natural beauty and cultural richness, with significant untapped potential. Our aim is to actively contribute to enhancing its air connectivity and help establish Skyros as a high-quality emerging destination in the Aegean.”

Skyros Mayor Kyriakos Antonopoulos added, “This partnership with Zela Aviation marks our first advisory effort in the development of air tourism for the island and signals a new chapter for Skyros. Our airport, which provides aviation fuel and will soon be upgraded through an international tender, has the potential to play a crucial role in our tourism strategy. Our vision is to achieve quality regional development, in harmony with the unique identity and unparalleled beauty of our island.”
