Andreas Artemiou: Artificial Intelligence is at the core of University of Limassol's strategy

With advanced academic programs and a strategic orientation toward digital transformation, the School of Technology and Innovation at the University of Limassol aims to become a modern, international hub for education and innovation. This is the vision outlined by Professor Andreas Artemiou, Dean of the School, in a recent interview.

He shares the School’s mission, discusses its collaborations with industry, and explains how the institution contributes to strengthening the educational and research ecosystem in Cyprus and across Europe.

Positioning for excellence in the academic ecosystem

Asked about the mission and vision of the School within the wider academic landscape of Cyprus and Europe, Professor Artemiou emphasised that the School of Technology and Innovation aspires to be an internationally recognised centre of excellence in technological education, research, and innovation.

“We are cultivating an environment where creative ideas flourish, offering innovative and interdisciplinary academic programs while also fostering entrepreneurship,” he said.

Despite being a relatively new School, it builds on the academic legacy of CIIM (Cyprus International Institute of Management), designing structures that meet the needs of modern society and the labour market. By integrating experienced academics with strong international teaching and research backgrounds, and forging partnerships with leading universities and enterprises, the School is steadily strengthening its global identity and appeal.

Preparing for a digitally transformed world

With artificial intelligence and digital transformation redefining the future of work, the School is deeply committed to equipping both students and professionals for this evolving landscape.

“AI lies at the heart of our strategy,” said Professor Artemiou. “Beyond research and practical implementation, it is embedded across our curriculum—both technically and in terms of its social and ethical implications.”

Given the fast-paced nature of technological change, the University of Limassol is committed to offering dynamic, adaptive programs that are constantly updated to ensure students are equipped with the most advanced tools and understanding in AI.

Courses not only enhance digital competencies and the understanding of AI tools and their societal impact, but also develop soft skills such as teamwork, problem-solving, and entrepreneurial thinking. Through the Executive Education Center and a strong commitment to lifelong learning, the University empowers students to remain agile in a rapidly evolving environment.

Supporting Cyprus’ digital economy and startup ecosystem

Innovation is a cornerstone of the School’s identity and is clearly reflected in its name. Through its academic offerings, the School promotes a deep understanding of the digital economy and fosters entrepreneurial skills.

The University is also developing a startup incubator platform to support new ventures, providing students with the tools, knowledge, and supportive environment needed to turn ideas into viable business initiatives.

Bridging academia, industry and policy

To ensure its programs remain relevant, competitive, and future-focused, the School actively collaborates with industry, government, and research institutions.

“Our engagement with industry and policy stakeholders is ongoing and meaningful,” Professor Artemiou explained. “Joint research projects, industry panels, and contributions from professionals in teaching help ensure our curriculum remains current and connected to real-world needs.”

The School also maintains strong networks to support student internships and facilitate their entry into the job market.

Strategic priorities for the future

Looking ahead, the School and the University of Limassol aspire to lead in technological innovation, research output, and social impact. Plans are in place to develop new, cutting-edge academic programs and cross-border collaborations that respond to international demands.

The University also aims to participate in flagship research projects in partnership with leading companies and global organizations, while expanding its academic faculty with internationally renowned scientists.

“Our goal is for the School to become a point of reference in the wider region and a meaningful contributor to Cyprus’ educational, research, and economic advancement,” said Professor Artemiou.

Academic programs that reflect a bold vision

The School’s interdisciplinary focus is central to its program development philosophy, ensuring innovation, relevance, and competitiveness.

Currently, the School offers four degree programs—one undergraduate and three postgraduate (including one online)—that integrate technology, data analytics, and entrepreneurship.

Notable examples of this approach include the BSc in Computing and Business Technologies, MSc in Business Intelligence & Data Analytics, and the MSc in Business Analytics (Online).

Additionally, the School’s Industrial Advisory Board, composed of market professionals, plays an active role in shaping the curriculum to align with real industry needs.
