Christos Angelides: Hoteliers provided an immediate response to wildfire victims' accommodation needs

Cyprus hoteliers once again showed their human and socially sensitive side when responding to the call of PASYXE, they opened their hotels, providing rooms to fire victims whose property was lost in the devastating fires in the mountain regions of Limassol last week.

The hotels have already hosted, either for a few hours or for a few days, dozens of people, while until Monday, 28 July they were also hosting the crews of the aircraft that arrived in Cyprus from abroad to assist in the efforts to extinguish the fires and remain on alert in the country.

In his statements to InBusinessNews, the General Manager of PASYXE, Christos Angelides, emphasised that "we are grateful because our member hotels reacted immediately by offering overnight stays and a constant flow of intention to assist in any way necessary to support the fire victims."

As he said, "We are waiting to see how things develop and the needs that will arise, and we will certainly act in a complementary manner."

Asked if there are currently any fire victims staying in hotels, Angelides responded in the affirmative, noting that "certainly many rooms and many hotels have been utilised these days."

"We are being constantly informed about the situation as it evolves from the Crisis Management Center of the Civil Defence, to which we allocated the rooms and they manage on our behalf," he added.

Asked about the number of fire victims who were and are being accommodated in hotels, the General Managerof PASYXE, after saying that it concerns dozens of people, emphasised that "we cannot say specific numbers with certainty, because they are constantly changing, because some people stay in hotels for a few hours, either for a bath or for a little rest, while others may stay for a few days."

"The uses are various, but in Paphos, the members of PASYXE hosted and are still hosting to this day all the crews of the aircraft," he added.

"The value and importance of hospitality are being demonstrated."

Regarding the attitude shown and demonstrated by the hoteliers, Angelides underlined that "as an Association, we are fully satisfied with the fact that our members responded immediately to this emergency, because at the end of the day it also proves the value and importance of hospitality as a national characteristic of our country."

At the same time, he pointed out, it once again highlights the human face of hoteliers, who - as he said - "whenever the need arises, respond positively and immediately to any request for assistance."

"The Cyprus Hotels Association remains at the disposal of the competent authorities and the State to support those affected, remaining dedicated and steadfast in its commitment to the principle of solidarity," Angelides concluded.

It is noted that citizens seeking assistance after the devastating fire in the mountainous Limassol area can contact the Ministry of Interior's Civil Defence Crisis Management Center on the following telephone numbers: 22-403450, 22-403451 and 22-403452.
