Tax Department raises the alarm over misleading VAT refund messages

The Tax Department has issued a warning over misleading emails featuring the logo of the Government Portal "gov.cy", and which urge unsuspecting citizens to scan a QR code in order to receive a Value Added Tax (VAT) refund.

As the Department states in its announcement, the messages also cite as a contact email an incorrect email address with a reference to the new Tax For All (TFA) Computerised System.

The Department draws the attention of citizens to such messages, which attempt to trick the user into opening suspicious files or following malicious links, and urges those who have received such messages to ignore them.

It is noted that VAT, Income Tax, etc. refunds are carried out only by transfer to a bank account, the IBAN of which is declared by the taxpayer to the Department through secure procedures.

It is also emphasised that any communication between the Tax Department and taxpayers via electronic messages is carried out only through electronic addresses, which end in: @tax.mof.gov.cy, the announcement said.
