EIB Vice President Kakouris given tour of under-construction CING research centre

The Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics' new building is expected to be ready in October 2025, as reported during a visit and tour of the under-construction building given to the Vice President of the European Investment Bank (EIB), Kyriacos Kakouris.
During his visit, Kakouris was given a tour of the Institute's under-construction building, which will house a state-of-the-art research centre.
This is an ambitious project of high strategic importance for Cyprus, which is financed by the European Investment Bank and the Cypriot Government.
It is recalled that construction work began in June 2023, while the project constitutes a substantial investment in the future of science and innovation in Cyprus, decisively strengthening the Institute's research infrastructure and international competitiveness.
The new building is approximately 11,000 square meters in area, with upgraded research infrastructure and new technology equipment, and will house six new research groups.

In his statements, on the sidelines of the tour, Kakouris underlined the importance of the cooperation between the EIB and the Institute, while pointing out the crucial role that research and innovation play in the well-being of societies and sustainable development.
"It is with great pleasure that I accepted the invitation to be here today, to see the progress of the project, which has been financed by the EIB. This building is the first project in the field of research that we have financed in Cyprus," he said.
Kakouris expressed the hope that before the end of the year, the centre would be ready to fulfill its role for the Institute.

On his part, the Chief Executive Officer and Medical Director of The Cyprus Institute of Neurology & Genetics, Professor Leonidas A. Phylactou, stated that "the construction of the new research centre is a milestone in the Institute's journey and a springboard for the further development of our scientific mission."
He expressed his thanks to the European Investment Bank and the Cypriot Government for their valuable support.
As Phylactou said, "the new building will in a few months be used for new research activities, strengthening our ability to offer high-quality research work and by extension specialised health services for the benefit of Cypriot society."
During the visit, representatives of the Mass Media also had the opportunity to be informed about the progress of the project, the importance of cooperation with the EIB and the strategic role of the new research centre in strengthening the scientific and research infrastructure of Cyprus.
