Demetris Demetriou on Hermes Airports’ dedication to the triptych of safety, health, environment
07:10 - 16 June 2025

Hermes Airports invests in the triptych of safety, health and environmental management with consistency and dedication.
And this is because, as Demetris Demetriou Health & Safety, Environment and Facility Management (HSE and FM) Manager at Hermes Airports, emphatically emphasises, the human being is at the centre of every action.
With respect for passengers, employees and the environment, Hermes Airports applies high standards and innovative practices, proving daily that responsibility and progress can coexist.
With certifications such as ISO 14.001, ISO 45.001 and EMAS, as well as the classification of its two airports at Level 4+ of the Airport Carbon Accreditation, Hermes Airports, as Demetriou notes, demonstrates its commitment to sustainability in practice.
At the same time, participation in the collective European Net Zero 2050 commitment reinforces the long-term goal of a zero carbon footprint. For all this, as he says characteristically, we feel proud that our efforts contribute substantially to the common good.
From recycling and energy saving, to cleaning robots and advanced monitoring systems, innovation is being integrated into airport operations. The HSE, SMS & Facility Management Department ensures that every operation is based on safety, care and continuous improvement. In the interview, he shares the Department's philosophy, actions and priorities.

Demetris Demetriou , Manager HSE, SMS and Facility Management
At Hermes Airports, we are firmly committed to providing a high level of safety, health and environmental management for employees, passengers, partners, neighbouring communities and the entire airport ecosystem in general.
Through specific and measurable goals, we produce substantial results that secure us certifications that demonstrate our focus on quality, safety, the environment and continuous improvement.
In this context, we have secured and maintain the ISO 14,001 certificate for environmental management, the EMAS certification for the European Eco-Management and Audit Scheme, the ISO 45,001 for health and safety, and the ISO 50,001 for energy management.
At the same time, our long-standing commitment to reducing carbon emissions guides our energy policy strategy.
Hermes Airports has signed the collective European commitment Net Zero 2050, which foresees zero carbon emissions in all activities by 2050. By achieving our goals, we managed to rank our two airports among only 50 worldwide that have received the ACI Airport Carbon Accreditation certificate at Level 4+ for Carbon Neutrality.
Furthermore, with a holistic recycling system that we implement in collaboration with airlines, ground handling companies and other partners operating within the airport, we achieved the recycling of 917 tons of waste for 2024, corresponding to 30% of total waste, always having a sustainable future as our top goal.
A key part of our mission is the implementation of Safety Management System of a structured safety management framework, which identifies, assesses and reduces risks in the airport area for employees, passengers, flights and facilities.
With advanced systems, we monitor, record - and if necessary, intervene - regarding noise levels, air pollution and water quality both within the two airports and in the surrounding areas, prioritising people and the environment.
In consultation with our partners and as part of our continuous investment in innovation, the first of its kind state-of-the-art cleaning robot in Cyprus has been put into operation. At the same time, other smaller robots are enhancing cleaning services and ensuring that specific airport areas maintain high levels of cleanliness.
The Department's multidimensional role is not limited to the above as, among other things, we are responsible for a series of responsibilities such as staff training on safety, health and environmental issues as well as the management of personal protective equipment.
We are proud that our efforts and work results play a decisive role in achieving Hermes Airports’ goals. With the same dedication and team spirit, we continue dynamically for even more successes in the future.
