I am proud of the success of our maritime sector, President says

The growth and continued success of the country's maritime sector was praised by President, Nikos Christodoulides, during his speech at the General Assembly of the International Chamber of Shipping held in Athens.

“We are proud of the remarkable growth and the continued success of our maritime sector and we are working to expand it to new horizons,” Christodoulides said, adding that shipping is one of the main pillars of the Cypriot economy, contributing more than 7% to Cyprus' Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

At the same time, the President of the Republic of Cyprus referred to the prestige of the Cypriot shipping industry and the high quality of the country's shipping register, where high safety standards are applied, and underlined that Cyprus has become a fully developed maritime centre.

During the General Assembly of the International Chamber of Shipping, the new Secretary General Thomas Kazakos took office.  Referring to the appointment of Kazakos as the new Secretary General of the International Chamber of Shipping, President Christodoulides said that “it is a great honour for Cyprus and the shipping industry and can be described as a historic milestone, as a Cypriot takes over the reins of this global maritime organisation.”

Finally, President Christodoulides extended an invitation for the next General Assembly of the International Chamber of Shipping to be held in Cyprus.
