Significant drop in car registrations, 20.2% plunge in saloons in April

The Cypriot car market recorded a slowdown in the first four months of 2025, particularly in April, with passenger saloon cars facing the strongest downward pressure (20.2%), according to Cystat.

Total registrations of motor vehicles in the period January–April 2025 fell by 8.3% to 16,133, compared to 17,589 in the same period of 2024. The April decline was even steeper, reaching 18.6%, with 3,877 vehicles registered compared to 4,762 in April 2024.

The most notable drop was seen in passenger saloon cars, which fell by 20.2% in April (2,924 from 3,662), while for the entire four-month period, the decline stood at 9.7% (12,509 versus 13,851). It is worth noting that nearly 56% of these cars were used vehicles.

Despite the overall decline, rental car registrations recorded a 10.9% increase in the January–April period, reaching 1,551 units. Meanwhile, there was a gradual shift toward more environmentally friendly vehicles: hybrid cars made up 43.3% of saloon registrations (up from 37.4% last year), and electric vehicles rose to 4.8% (from 3.6%), while petrol and diesel models declined to 42.9% and 9.0%, respectively.

Bus registrations also decreased (to 44 from 78), as did goods conveyance vehicles, which fell by 2.1%, with heavy trucks down 7.8% and rental vehicles plunging by 41.4%.

On the other hand, the market for larger motorcycles (>50cc) moved upwards, posting a 24.7% increase (1,371 versus 1,099), in contrast with a decline in smaller moped registrations which decreased to 80 compared to 364.
