Car market continues its upward trend - The brands that buyers prefer

The car market is on an upward trajectory, as registrations of saloon passenger cars increased by 14% annually, reaching 14,259 in the first four months of 2026 compared to 12,509 in the corresponding period last year.

As shown by data from CySTAT, used cars (i.e. from dealerships and from used car dealers/yards) maintain the clear lead, with registrations amounting to 9,459 and accounting for 66.3% compared to 4,800 or 33.7% held by the registrations of new saloon cars.

Hybrid saloons account for over 50% of the market (50.8% from 43.3% in the first quarter of 2025), while the share of petrol-powered cars fell to 35.6% (from 42.9%) and diesel-powered cars to 8.5% (from 9%). On the other hand, the share of electric saloons increased slightly, accounting for 5.2% of the market (compared to 4.8% in the first quarter of 2025).

Total passenger car market

Total registrations of saloon passenger cars amounted to 14,259 in the period January - April 2026, of which 12,866 concerned private cars.

Toyota maintains its lead in this category, with 3,137 registrations. It is followed by Mazda (1,628), Nissan (1,198), BMW (914) and Mercedes (805).

The remaining positions on the relevant list also include brands such as Kia (580), Honda (554), Volkswagen (444), Hyundai (354) and Audi (305), while BYD gained particular momentum with 286 registrations in the first four months of 2026.

New saloon passenger cars

Registrations of new saloon passenger cars accounted for 33.7% of the market , reaching 4,800 in the first four months of 2026, of which 4,371 were private cars.

Kia continues to lead the new passenger saloon car market with 554 registrations, followed by Nissan (460), Toyota (328), Volkswagen (324) and Hyundai (311).

Moreover, the list in question also includes brands such as BMW (287), BYD (286), Mercedes (218), Renault (172) and Jeep (156).

 

Used saloon passenger cars

Used cars account for 66.3% of the saloon market, with their registrations in the period January - April 2026 standing at 9,459, of which 8,495 concerned private cars.

It is, again, clarified that used saloon registrations arise from both dealerships and used car dealers/yards.

Toyota maintains the first place by a wide margin in this category, with 2,809 registrations, followed by Mazda (1,607), Nissan (738), BMW (627) and Mercedes (587).

Also on the list of used saloon car registrations are Honda (506), Audi (182), Lexus (166), Suzuki (159) and Volvo (150).
