CERA: Competitive electricity market from 15 September, first trading day on 1 October
08:22 - 30 May 2025

The Cyprus Energy Regulatory Authority (CERA) has announced the acceptance of a Cyprus Transmission System Operator (TSO) proposal to start the commercial operation of the Competitive Electricity Market on 15 September, 2025 and the determination of 1 October, 2025 as the first Trading Day.
The Cyprus Competitive Electricity Market is a restructured energy framework designed to transition the country's electricity sector from a monopolistic to a fully liberalised system, and bring down the cost to consumers.
In an announcement, CERA states that with Decision No. 185/2025 dated 29 May, 2025, and "taking into account, among other things, that it is not appropriate for the transition to a completely new environment that greatly affects the operation of the Electricity System to take place during the period when the maximum demand of the year is noted, it decided to approve the proposal of the TSO, namely the start of the commercial operation of the Competitive Electricity Market on 15 September, 2025 and the determination of 1 October, 2025 as the first Trading Day."
It adds that "participants in the Transitional Regulation of the Electricity Market, as well as all those interested in joining the Competitive Electricity Market upon its launch, should promptly take all required actions on their part based on the provisions of the Electricity Market Rules and in accordance with the procedures of the TSO".
Finally, CERA states that "the readiness of all parties involved is crucial for the successful transition to the Competitive Electricity Market."
