EU-US trade relations discussed at extraordinary FAC, Cyprus stresses importance of unity

EU-United States (US) trade relations were at the heart of the discussions of the EU’s Extraordinary Foreign Affairs Council in the composition of Trade Ministers which took place in Luxembourg.

Cyprus was represented by Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Energy, Commerce and Industry, Marios Panayides, who underlined the importance of dialogue with the US.

According to a statement, the focus of the discussions was the EU-US trade relations. 

It said that, Panayides, in his intervention, “welcomed the EU’s response and stressed the importance of unity between the member states, which is the cornerstone of the EU’s strength and credibility on the world stage.” “He stressed the importance of dialogue with the US aimed at tangible and constructive results in line with the EU’s strategic objectives,” it adds.

Panayides also said that the bloc should be ready to take targeted and proportionate measures to protect European businesses and consumers, and to maintain the resilience of the Single Market. In this context, he also referred to the need to expand trade and investment ties with like-minded partners.

The Council also discussed EU-China trade relations.

Panayides “stressed” China’s importance, especially in the current geopolitical context, as well as the multifaceted and special relationship between the EU and China, adding that ways of closer cooperation must be found, taking into account the interests of both sides, according to the statement.
