Cyprus Securities and Exchange Commission’s school lectures achieve strong student engagement

The Cyprus Securities and Exchange Commission (CySEC) has successfully completed its 5th cycle of financial literacy lectures in schools, recording strong participation and growing interest from students and schools across Cyprus.

Between March and May 2026, CySEC Officers delivered 18 lectures to schools across all districts of Cyprus, bringing the total number of students reached by the CySEC financial literacy in schools initiative to 3.450 students from primary, lower secondary, and upper secondary education.

The initiative has gained momentum year on year, with notable demand this year originating from schoolteachers as well as students themselves, said CySEC.

Implemented within the framework of Global Money Week 2026 (16-22 March), the lectures are designed to strengthen students’ financial awareness and cultivate the knowledge and skills needed to make sound and responsible financial decisions in the future.

CySEC Chairman Dr George Theocharides said the demand reflects an increasing need for financial literacy at an early age.

“The strong response from schools and students confirms that financial literacy is now being recognised by young people as an essential life skill for navigating today’s economic and digital environment. It is an encouraging sign that young people are now actively seeking knowledge that will help them to protect themselves and move forward safely into the future. As CySEC, we remain firmly committed to advancing financial education and empowering the next generation through targeted initiatives with long-term impact.”

Tailored to each age group, the sessions focus on practical aspects of everyday life and delivered through interactive discussions and real-life examples. Students are taken through the basics of personal finance, including challenges such as online scams, financial fraud and misleading investment promotions.

Special emphasis is placed on CySEC’s key theme for 2026, which is attaining and preserving personal financial independence. Relevant to this is the new CySEC Investor Guide on personal financial independence in the digital world.

Promoting financial literacy and strengthening investor protection remain core strategic priorities for CySEC, said Dr Theocharides.

Since the launch of the National Strategy for Financial Literacy and Financial Education in Cyprus, CySEC has actively supported the national plan through the delivery of targeted educational initiatives and partnerships, with the aim of enhancing citizens’ financial knowledge, awareness, and decision-making skills.
