Four out of five internet connections in Cyprus at a speed of 100Mbps or higher

Four out of five (81.5%) internet connections in Cyprus have speeds of 100Mbps or higher, with 63.4% of total connections being fiber optic.

This is according to statistical data published by the Office of the Commissioner for Electronic Communications and Postal Regulation (OCECPR), based on data until December 2024.

Additionally, according to the data, mobile phone contracts with unlimited data, voice, and SMS account for 59.56%, while the ratio of mobile phone users to the population of the Republic of Cyprus has reached 163.5%.

Broadband and Fixed Telephony

Fixed broadband subscriptions saw a slight increase of 6,391 subscribers (1.79%) compared to 2023. However, there was a significant 4.9% rise in connections with speeds of 100Mbps or higher compared to the first half of the year, due to the expansion of high-capacity networks and free speed upgrades. Meanwhile, the percentage of subscribers with speeds above 1Gbps saw its largest six-month increase so far (1.4%), reaching 4.7%. As a result, four out of five connections (81.5%) now have speeds of 100Mbps or higher.

Furthermore, xDSL connections decreased by 10.3% in 2024 (down to 17%) compared to 2023, while fiber optic connections increased by 12%, reaching 63.4%. A 1.7% drop was also observed in DOCSIS 3.0/3.1 connections (down to 19.6%). For the first time, the number of xDSL subscriptions has fallen below the number of DOCSIS 3.0/3.1 subscriptions.

The average data volume per fixed broadband line in Q4 2024 reached 1.10 TB, continuing its upward trend, while the total data volume for 2024 increased by 15.4% compared to 2023.

In 2024, there was a decline in total fixed telephony connections (by 24,454) compared to 2023. Fiber optic connections are now the primary means of fixed telephony, covering 76.8% of the market.

Mobile Telephony and Broadband Access

Regarding mobile telephony, 2024 saw an increase of 76,194 users compared to 2023. The percentage of contract-based subscriptions increased by 2.2%, with contracts offering unlimited data, voice, and SMS accounting for 59.56% of total contracts.

The ratio of mobile phone users to the population of the Republic of Cyprus rose by 8.3%, reaching 163.5%. This increase was driven by contract subscriptions, as prepaid mobile users decreased by 10,982 in the same period. The total mobile data volume for 2024 increased by 42.6% compared to 2023.

Total Data Volume

The total data volume for 2024 increased by 278,188 TB (18.5%) compared to 2023. At the same time, the percentage of data transmitted via fixed broadband remains below 90% and continues to decline, reaching 85.31% in Q4 2024. This trend is driven by the rise in mobile contracts with unlimited data, a trend expected to continue.
