George Michailides: A comprehensive security strategy is required to protect AI

A comprehensive security strategy, timely incident detection, and continuous collaboration are crucial for the adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) in Cyprus, according to Commissioner of Communications George Michaelides.

In his address during the "Demystifying & Unleashing AI" conference, organised by Cyprus Innovation Technologies, Michailides elaborated on the responsibilities of the Commission, as well as its new role in cybersecurity, as outlined in the guidelines of the EU's AI Directive.

Describing cybersecurity compliance issues as complex since 2018, he explained that artificial intelligence makes compliance “even more demanding”. He explained that a risk-based approach is applied to AI, clarifying that “the higher the risk, the stricter the regulations”.

He highlighted the importance of understanding the AI adoption timeline and how it functions to ensure a smooth transition and effective implementation of regulations in Cyprus. At the same time, he mentioned that the Commission assists stakeholders in adapting their strategies in light of upcoming changes.

“As regulatory bodies, our goal is to enhance awareness and encourage open dialogue with businesses, academia, and relevant stakeholders to identify both the risks and growth opportunities of AI,” he stressed.

In conclusion, he stated that “to protect AI, a comprehensive security strategy, timely incident detection, and continuous collaboration are required” for the safe adoption of artificial intelligence.
