Nearly four in ten users in Cyprus encountered hostile online messages in 2025

The share of internet users in Cyprus who encountered online messages they considered hostile or degrading towards specific groups of people or individuals stood at 38.98% in 2025.

According to data published by Eurostat, Cyprus remains below the EU average and shows a slight change compared with 2023, when the figure stood at 38.45%.

At EU level, 42.3% of internet users were exposed in 2025 to similar hostile or degrading messages. It is noted that the EU average is based on data from 20 countries for which information was available. Compared with 2023, there is a significant increase, as the corresponding share had stood at 36.57%.

Eurostat notes that in seven EU Member States, more than half of the population reported encountering hostile online messages. The highest shares were recorded in Hungary (60.9%), Finland (56.7%) and Slovakia (56.2%).

By contrast, the lowest shares were recorded in Latvia (29.3%), Greece (29.4%), Germany (33.7%) and Lithuania (33.8%).
