Heathrow fire disrupts Cyprus-UK flights

Several British Airways flights to and from Larnaca Airport have been cancelled, with further disruption expected due to a massive fire at the UK airport that has led to it being closed for at least 24 hours.

In the morning, a flight scheduled to depart at 07:40 from Larnaca to Heathrow was cancelled.

According to information from Cyprus News Agency (CNA) sourced from Hermes Airports, the island’s airports’ operator, two additional British Airways flights were also cancelled—one arrival and one departure.

Specifically, the flight that was expected to arrive at Larnaca Airport at 17:50 and the departure scheduled for 18:45 were both cancelled.

Due to the ongoing situation at London’s airport, it remains unclear whether the British Airways flight scheduled to arrive at Larnaca at 00:05 on Saturday, March 22 will operate as planned.

“The resumption of flights to Heathrow depends entirely on the airport’s ability to restore operations. We are closely monitoring the situation and will update passengers as soon as more information becomes available,” Hermes Airports said.

British Airways, the main airline affected by the disruption, warned of further disruptions.

More than 1,000 flight cancellations worldwide

“This will clearly have a significant impact on our operations and our customers, and we are working as quickly as possible to advise them of their travel options for the next 24 hours and beyond,” British Airways said.

The power outage has affected 145,000 passengers and led to more than 1,000 flight cancellations worldwide.

Flight tracking website FlightRadar24 reported that at least 120 inbound flights had to divert to alternative airports, significantly disrupting air travel across Europe and beyond.

Authorities are working to restore power and bring Heathrow back to full operation. Meanwhile, 70 firefighters from the London Fire Brigade are battling the blaze at the substation, which continues to burn after breaking out later on Thursday night.

Passengers affected by cancellations and delays are urged to contact their airlines for ticket reissues or refunds. Hermes Airports has recommended that travellers stay updated through official announcements for real-time flight information.

With Heathrow Airport remaining shut for the rest of the day, major disruptions to other flights between Cyprus and the UK are expected to continue.
