Hellas Sat developing a new private terrestrial digital television network in Cyprus

Hellas Sat has announced that it has received a license to install and operate a Digital Terrestrial Television Network for the period 1/12/2025 to 9/11/2040.

The license was issued by the Director of the Deputy Ministry of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy’s Department of Electronic Communications.

As stated, the authorisation consists of granting exclusive rights for the broadcast of four Single Frequency Networks with two broadcast channels for each network, of which one channel for broadcasting from the Troodos region and the second channel for broadcasting from the free Famagusta region, i.e. eight television broadcast channels in total.

According to the technical specifications and special terms of the tender notice, the broadcast protocol of the new network will be DVB-T2, which expands the speed and consequently the broadcast capabilities per single-frequency television network, making the terrestrial broadcast of high definition (HD TV) and ultra-high definition (4K TV) television programmes possible.

Sharing a relevant press release via social media, Hellas Sat CEO Christodoulos Protopapas commented, "our company is currently evaluating the submitted bids for the supply of new digital multiplexing and television broadcasting equipment, while orders for the most innovative and reliable equipment currently on the market are expected to be placed in March."

"Both I personally and the entire Hellas Sat technical team in Cyprus are excited and particularly happy that we will be providing Cypriot households with the opportunity to watch high definition (HD TV) and ultra-high definition (4K TV) television programmes, thus upgrading the television scene in Cyprus," he said.

We are delighted, he added, "to be repeating the same work that we had successfully accomplished 35 years ago with the establishment of the television station O LOGOS, which was also the first private television station in Cyprus."

He stated that the Management of HELLAS SAT is also oriented towards the production of television content for both terrestrial and satellite broadcasts and the Technical Team of HELLAS SAT in Cyprus "is already moving enthusiastically in this direction, planning actions and undertaking initiatives which will be announced in the near future."
