Car registrations on the up- The brands with the most demand for new and used cars

The number of registrations of saloon passenger cars was significantly higher in May this year, both compared to April and the corresponding month in 2024.

According to data from CySTAT, registrations of saloon passenger cars increased annually by 11.7% in May 2025, reaching 3,715 (compared to 2,924 in April this year) from 3,325 in May 2024.

On the contrary, in the first five months of the year, a negative picture in the car market prevailed, with saloon registrations falling by 5.5% to 16,224 compared to 17,176 in the corresponding period last year.

Of the total number of saloon passenger cars registered in the period January-May 2025, 6,874 or 42.4% were new and 9,350 or 57.6% were used cars.

Petrol or diesel powered and hybrid vehicles are battling for the lead, accounting for 43.7% and 42.9% respectively, while the share of electric vehicles recorded a marginal increase, reaching 4.7% from 3.4% in the corresponding period last year, while the market share of diesel vehicles fell to 8.8% from 10%.

Of the 16,224 registrations of saloon passenger cars that took place in the first five months of 2025, 13,927 concerned private cars.

Toyota maintains the lead, with 2,784 registrations, followed by Mazda with 1,687 registrations. Nissan has 1,240 registrations, Kia 976, while BMW completes the top five, with 953 registrations.

The list of the total passenger car market for the first five months of the year also includes brands such as Mercedes (875), Volkswagen (666), Hyundai (560), Honda (531) and Audi (394).

New saloon passenger cars

Meanwhile, 42.4% of the market is occupied by registrations of new passenger saloon cars, which amounted to 6,874 in the first five months of 2025, of which 6,024 concerned private cars.

Kia continues to be in first place, with 949 registrations, followed by Volkswagen (560), Nissan (525), Hyundai (519) and Toyota (493).

The top ten in new passenger saloon car registrations in the first five months also includes brands such as BMW (393), Mercedes (331), Jeep (284), Renault (282) and Audi (243).

Used saloon passenger cars

Registrations of used passenger saloon cars constituted the majority of the market, accounting for 57.6%, as they amounted to 9,350, of which 7,903 concerned private cars.

Toyota remains at the top, with 2,291 registrations, while Mazda is slightly behind, with 1,653 registrations.

Nissan (715) and BMW (560) follow, while Mercedes (544) complete the top five.

The list of used saloon registrations also includes Honda (484), Land Rover (214), Suzuki (167), Audi (151) and Lexus (123).
