Cabinet approves Citizens' Initiative Law

The Cabinet has approved the 2025 Citizens' Initiative Law which will allow citizens to take an active role and intervene in public life.

Citizens' Commissioner Panagiotis Palates said that citizens will be able to shape new policies that will emerge from civil society itself, based on their daily needs.

He explained that this is a bill that was submitted by the previous government in 2017 but the new government approved new amendments and improved provisions, so that it becomes more practical and more flexible.

Palates said that the amendments have to do with two separate procedures. The first will be activated when 500 signatures are collected for any proposal submitted by the citizen and will oblige the respective Ministry to give a duly justified response regarding the actions that the Government has taken or intends to take and will inform the citizen in writing about the respective issue.

In the second procedure 5,000 signatures are required and the respective Ministry, to which the specific proposal will refer, will be obliged to enter into an expanded public consultation and subsequently inform the citizen regarding the development and procedures that will arise regarding the specific issue.
