More than €80m in EU subsidies not collected by farmers, Commissioner tells MPs

More than €80 million in available EU subsidies has not been collected by farmers in the last ten years, Commissioner of agricultural payments Andreas Kyprianou has revealed.

He was speaking before the House Finance Committee Monday, during a discussion for the 2025 budget of €17.3 million.

MPs, in their statements, said that the money was not collected despite the fact that it was approved, because the applicants cannot secure the necessary funding for their contribution.

In his statements to MPs, Kyprianou announced that more than 300 young farmers received subsidies and are participating in rural development programmes, describing this as very encouraging for the future of the primary sector.

According to the Commissioner, the Cyprus Agricultural Payments Organisation delivered, via subsidies, an amount of €2.21 billion to the agricultural economy, since the organisation’s establishment.

Kyprianou said that in 2024 they subsidised the Cypriot agricultural economy with €119.5 million, an amount that includes rural development programmes, as well as direct payments, hectare subsidies etc.

He also said that a discussion is underway to find ways to finance citizens who wish to become farmers, livestock breeders etc.

MPs described as very promising the fact that young people still want to become farmers.
