President discussing "three to four Commissioner portfolios" with von der Leyen

President, Nikos Christodoulides has said that he is discussing three to four Commissioner portfolios with the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, and that these are portfolios in which the Republic of Cyprus will have added value.

Asked if he had received a letter from the President of the European Commission regarding the Commissioners, President Christodoulides replied in the affirmative, adding that he had received a letter and that he would have to respond by 30 August.

"It is a letter sent to all the leaders of the European Council," he said.

"Furthermore, as I said, I am in telephone contact with the President of the Commission, in relation to the portfolios that are of interest to the Republic of Cyprus and based on our discussion I will also respond in writing," he said.

Asked to say which portfolios are of interest to Cyprus, the President of the Republic said that they are portfolios in which the Republic of Cyprus will have added value, "portfolios in which our knowledge will be helpful and will strengthen the EU."

According to the President, there are three-four specific portfolios, which he is discussing with the President of the European Commission.

"The decision that will be made in relation to the portfolio that will be given to the Cypriot Commissioner, will be the one that will determine the name. It is very important that the person who will participate in the European Commission on behalf of the Republic of Cyprus knows the subject very well in order to be able to respond successfully," he said.
