President Christodoulides to meet with UN envoy Holguin

Cyprus President, Nikos Christodoulides is to hold a meeting with UN Secretary-General personal envoy on Cyprus, Maria Angela Holguin Cuellar.

The meeting will take place at 10.30 am (local time) on 13 May at the Presidential Palace.

Holguin is to also have a meeting on Monday with Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar, at 12 noon.

This will be President Christodoulides’ second meeting with Holguin this month, who is expected to leave Cyprus on 14 May.

President Christodoulides met with Holguin last Wednesday and, as the Government Spokesperson stated, it was the first meeting after the Conclusions of the last European Council, “where the Republic of Cyprus together with the EU sent a clear, positive message to Turkey for the interconnection of EU-Turkey relations with progress on the Cyprus issue.”

Holguin, after last week’s meeting, said that it is the responsibility of the two leaders to listen to civil society's desire for progress.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively.

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres appointed Holguin in January as his personal envoy for Cyprus, to assume a Good Offices role on his behalf and search for common ground on the way forward in the Cyprus issue.
