Agriculture Ministry official highlights need for autonomy in proteins, food security

Ministry of Agriculture Permanent Secretary, Andreas Gregoriou, attended an informal meeting of EU Agriculture Ministers, in Belgium, held under the Belgian presidency of the Council of the EU.

He spoke of the importance of a holistic approach in protein production and consumption, as well as of the necessity for food security, through the employment of production methods, compatible with sustainable food systems.

Gregoriou also spoke of the challenges Cyprus encounters, due to its significant dependency on imports of protein feed. He underlined the importance of research and innovation in protein production, noting that the use of new technologies should always take in account consumers' health and avoid creating monopolies in food production.

The EU Ministers discussed the importance of protein security in the EU, for both human and animal consumption. The ministers also visited research centers and farms in Belgium and were informed about innovative agricultural practices.
