The possibilities for further interconnection of Cyprus with the American innovation ecosystem, as well as the decisive role that the Cypriot diaspora can play in this effort, were highlighted by the "Cyprus & Innovation" event, which took place in California on Tuesday, 3 November, as part of the Plug and Play Silicon Valley Winter Summit 2026.
The event was attended by the Deputy Minister of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy, Dr. Nicodemos Damianou, and the Director General of the Research and Innovation Foundation (RIF), Theodoros Loukaidis, who had the opportunity to meet and exchange views with scientists and professionals from the Cypriot diaspora in the USA.
The discussion focused on the course of the Cypriot research, innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystem, the prospects that are shaping up for Cyprus, as well as the Government's policies and initiatives for its further development and international strengthening.
In a social media post, Nicodemos Damianou emphasised that the knowledge, experience and international connections of Cypriots operating in the US constitute a valuable asset for the country. As he noted, they can contribute substantially to strengthening cooperation with the American technological ecosystem, as well as to the development and international networking of Cypriot startups.
A decisive role in this effort is played by Cyprus Catalyst, the initiative created following the contacts of the President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, in the US in April 2025, with the aim of acting as a bridge between Cyprus and the American ecosystem of technology, innovation and entrepreneurship.
As the Deputy Minister stated, the aim is to facilitate this interconnection and ensure its continuity, so that the know-how and contacts of the Cypriot diaspora can be translated into specific opportunities for cooperation and development for the Cypriot ecosystem.
"Minds in Cyprus" in the spotlight
The next important step in the effort is the 'Minds in Cyprus' initiative, which will be presented oin New York on 30 November, as part of the upcoming mission of the President of the Republic to the USA.
The initiative is part of the broader effort to utilise the human capital of the Cypriot diaspora, strengthening ties with professionals and scientists who are active abroad and creating conditions for their more active participation in the development and innovation path of Cyprus.
The presence of Nicodemos Damianou and Theodoros Loukaidis at the Plug and Play Silicon Valley Winter Summit, which is taking place from 3 to 5 November, is part of the overall effort to promote Cyprus as a regional center of innovation and technology, as well as to strengthen business and investment partnerships with the USA.
