UNSG remains committed to informal expanded talks, Dujarric says on Cyprus issue

UN Secretary-General Spokesperson, Stephane Dujarric, has referred to Antonio Guterres’ commitment to holding informal expanded talks for finding common ground for the resumption of talks on the Cyprus issue. He was responding to a question by the Cyprus News Agency during the Press Briefing at the international organisation’s headquarters in New York.

“As the Secretary-General agreed with the leaders during their informal dinner on 15 October, he looks forward to holding an informal meeting in a broader format in the near future under his auspices to discuss the way forward. He remains engaged with the parties in this regard”, he noted, speaking on 13 November.

Asked about a possible visit by Under-Secretary-General Rosemary DiCarlo to Cyprus in the near future, Dujarric said, “about the broader timing of the formal meeting we will let you know as soon as we have something to announce”.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively.
