Cyprus sees a reduction of pending court cases, Supreme Court President says

The backlog cases in Cyprus courts have been reduced by more than twice the percentage of the Republic’s obligation under the EU Recovery and Resilience Plan, President of the Supreme Court, Katerina Stamatiou has told parliamentarians.

She was speaking on 11 November, during the discussion of the budget of the judicial service before the House Finance Committee.

Stamatiou said that Cyprus was committed to liquidating 20% of the civil cases and appeals pending for more than two years, by the end of the first half of 2024 and 40% by of the end of the first half of 2026 and to this end an action plan is in place.

Stamatiou said that by the end of September, cases registered up to December 31, 2018 have decreased by 57% and cases registered between January 1, 2019 and June 30, 2022, have decreased by 30%.

She also told the MPs that the total clearance rate of cases registered until June 30, 2022, which fall under the number of backlog cases, amounts to 42%, and that pending cases have decreased, more than twice the rate of Cyprus’ obligation according to Recovery and Resilience Plan.
