New contractor to be sought for Paphos-Polis Chrysochous road

The state is terminating its contract with INTRAKAT for the construction of the new Paphos-Polis Chrysochous road, since, as stated in an announcement by the Public Works Department, the contractor is not meeting its obligations.

This development follows the termination of the contracts with Kition for the development of the port and marina of Larnaca, with CMC for the terminal in Vassilikos, as well as with the contractor company for the development of e-justice,

According to the Public Works Department announcement, "today, Monday, November 11, 2024, a 14-day notice letter has been served to the "contractor's representative" of the Contractor INTRACOM CONSTRUCTIONS SOCIETE ANONYME TECHNICAL AND STEEL CONSTRUCTIONS (distinctive title INTRAKAT) for the termination of the contractor's employment by the employer pursuant to clause 15.2 of the terms of the contract."

With this letter, it is added, the employer terminates the employment of the contractor in accordance with the contract and gives him a 14-day notice pursuant to clause 15.2 of the terms of the contract, by which he is called upon to remove himself from the construction site within 14 days of receiving it.

"Despite the employer's repeated warnings to the contractor, during regular meetings and also through letters, to deal with the huge and unjustified delay created due to the contractor's fault, no efforts were made to deal with it, but on the contrary, even activities which started to be executed in the last eight months, did not have the expected and predicted progress, while they could be executed without interruption,", it was emphasised.

According to the Department, “during the execution of the contract, the contractor raised numerous time and financial claims, which were reviewed through the statutory procedures and have been rejected. After notifying the contractor of the existence of a dispute, the Central Committee on Changes and Claims studied the multi-page detailed report of the Ad-Hoc committee and by letter dated November 8, 2024, informed the Department of Public Works that, after taking into account all critical points, it had decided to reject all the contractor's requests."

The Central Committee noted that by taking mitigation measures as stipulated in the contract and executing the project with due speed and without delays on the part of the contractor, the project could have been executed smoothly without any impact on the critical path of its schedule.

The Public Works Department is taking all necessary measures in cooperation with the Law Office of the Republic to ensure all the rights of the State are respected.

In parallel with the termination of the current contractor's employment, the Public Works Department will rapidly advance the procedures for contract re-announcement and completion of the project.
