President to attend climate change conference in Azerbaijan

President Nikos Christodoulides will participate in the 29th Conference of the Parties (COP29) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in Azerbaijan. 

According to a written statement by Government Spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis, President Christodoulides departs for Baku on 11 November. 

"The Conference will focus on enhancing financing to address climate change, implementing the agreements of the Paris Agreement, and accelerating efforts for adaptation and mitigation of the impacts of climate change," Letymbiotis said. 

On the morning of 12 November, President Christodoulides will attend the opening ceremony of the Summit of Heads of State and Government, which the Secretary-General of the United Nations will also address. 

"The President will intervene during the national statements of the leaders, where he will refer to the positions and actions of the Republic of Cyprus in addressing the consequences of climate change and the regional role that Cyprus plays in this direction," he noted. 

In the evening, the President will attend a dinner hosted by the president of Azerbaijan in honour of the leaders participating in COP29. 

Foreign Affairs Minister Konstantinos Kombos, the Government Spokesperson, Political Director of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Thessalia Salina Shambou, Director of the President's Diplomatic Office Doros Venezis, and other officials will accompany the President, who will return to Cyprus on 13 November.
