Limassol blaze finally under control

The fire in the semi-mountain area of Limassol is now under control, spokesman of the Fire Service Andreas Kettis told CNA, adding that forces remain in the area for possible reignitions.

The fire first ignited over the weekend and an effort has been underway to bring it under full control, after a number new fires kept sparking up.

Asked how Tuesday night went, Kettis said it was a quiet night.

“There were some very isolated incidents, very small flare-ups, which were dealt with by ground forces,” he said.

As regards Wednesday, 9 August, the Fire Service spokesman said that in the morning the aircraft sent from Israel would operate, mainly for demarcation, and, if necessary, they will make water drops.

He noted that at around 13.00 an event will be held at the Andreas Papandreou Air Base, in Paphos, a customary ceremony to thank everyone before the departure of the aircraft which had arrived in Cyprus from Israel to help put out the fire.

He added that the aircraft of other countries were gradually leaving, noting that the ones sent from Greece already left on Tuesday.
