Cypriot official elected President of European Mediterranean Regulators Group

Cyprus' Deputy Commissioner for Communications, Petros Galides, has been elected President of the European Mediterranean Regulators Group for Electronic Communications Networks and Services (European Mediterranean Regulators Group - EMERG) for the year 2024.

In a press release on 6 June, the Office of the Commissioner of Electronic Communication and Postal Regulation (OCECPR), said that Galides' candidacy was voted on by a large majority of the Plenary of the European and Mediterranean Regulators Group (EMERG), while, in addition to the Presidency for 2024, he has already assumed duties as Co-Chairman, since he was elected Co-chair for 2023.

EMERG, the press release adds, was founded on 1 July, 2008 in Malta, as an independent platform of the National Regulatory Authorities of the Mediterranean and European countries for electronic communications networks and services.

The EMERG Member countries are Albania, Austria, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Cyprus, Egypt, France, Germany, Greece, Israel, Italy, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Malta, Montenegro, Morocco, Palestine, Portugal, Spain, Slovenia, Switzerland, Tunisia, and Turkey.

The principles of EMERG are derived from the ideals and principles of Euro-Mediterranean cooperation defined in the Barcelona Declaration of 28 November 1995, which establishes the principles of a cooperative relationship aimed at establishing the Mediterranean region in a common area of peace, stability, and prosperity through the strengthening of political dialogue and cooperation in matters of security, economy, society, and culture, the press release concludes.
