The CYENS Centre of Excellence is expected to breathe new life into the historic building of the former Municipal Market in Nicosia.

The building will house CYENS’ new facilities in Mayor Lellos Demetriades Square in the centre of Nicosia Within the Walls.

New state-of-the-art facilities

Construction work is proceeding at an intensive pace in order to transform the space into a state-of-the-art facility that will meet the needs of the CYENS Centre of Excellence.

The building includes spaces for the Center's multiple offices and departments, as well as laboratories for its research groups.

The new CYENS facilities also include meeting rooms and collaboration spaces, which will host many different projects at the same time.

The aim of a recent tour, in the presence of, among others, of the Mayor of Nicosia and Chairman of the Board of Directors of CYENS, Constantinos Giorkadjis, Yiorgos Chrysanthou, the General Director of CYENS, the architect of the project, George Tsangarides, the project manager, George Neophytou and RISE CoE Project Coordinator European Affairs Officer at Nicosia Municipality, Charis Theocharous, was the presentation of the current phase of the building and information about its operation in the near future when the works are complete.

Bridging scientific research with innovation

The CYENS Centre of Excellence was established in 2018 as a non-profit organisation, in the walled city of Nicosia, by securing the support of the European Commission's Horizon 2020 funding program to support research and innovation.

The coordinator of the project is the Municipality of Nicosia, with the three public universities of Cyprus, and the European scientific institutions University College London (UCL) and Max Planck Institute (MPI), while it is also supported by the Republic of Cyprus.

The Centre is active in the areas of Interactive Media, Intelligent Systems and Emerging Technologies and conducts interdisciplinary and applied research in a wide range of disciplines.

With the aim of promoting research activities to bridge scientific research with innovation, the project seeks to play a key role in improving the performance of Cyprus and the wider region in the aforementioned fields, promoting research, technological development and innovation (ETKA) to achieve a competitive position in the global value chain.

Acting simultaneously as a link between academic research and industrial development, through the combined expertise of the staff, the project has the potential to provide solutions to a wide range of problems and serve almost all areas of the Cyprus Smart Specialisation Strategy, including Information and Communication Technologies and Environment.
