Electric vehicles' share rises to 4.7% in 2025, hybrids' to 44.3%

The increase in the number of electric and hybrid vehicles continued in 2025, with the share of electric vehicles in total passenger cars rising from 4.0% in 2024 to 4.7% in 2025 and hybrids from 37.1% to 44.3%, respectively, CySTAT has reported.

In contrast, the share of petrol-powered saloon cars decreased to 42.0% in 2025 from 48.6% in 2024, and that of diesel-powered cars to 8.9% from 10.3% in 2024.

More specefically, according to the 'Motor Vehicle Registrations' report for the period January - December 2025, published by CySTAT, the total number of registered vehicles increased by 5.8% in 2025 to 52,508, compared to 49,616 in 2024.

Registrations of passenger saloon cars increased by 6.2% to 40,778, compared to 38,410 in the corresponding period of 2024.

Of the total number of passenger saloon cars, 14,633 or 35.9% were new and 26,145 or 64.1% were used cars. Rental cars in particular recorded an increase of 32.4% to 5,169.

Furthermore, according to CySTAT, the share of petrol-powered saloon cars in this category of vehicles decreased in the period January - December 2025 to 42.0% (from 48.6% in the corresponding period of 2024), as did the share of diesel cars (from 10.3% in 2024 to 8.9% in 2025).

On the other hand, the share of electric vehicles increased (from 4.0% in 2024 to 4.7% in 2025) as did that of hybrid vehicles (from 37.1% to 44.3%).

In addition, motor coach and bus registrations increased to 181 in the period January-December 2025, from 133 in the same period in 2024, while registrations of goods conveyance vehicles increased to 6,208, compared to 5,811 in the corresponding period of 2024, marking an increase of 6.8%.

In particular, rental vehicles increased by 23.8% to 291, light trucks by 6.9% to 4,959, road goods vehicles (tractors) by 3.3% to 251, and heavy goods vehicles by 1.7% to 707.

Registrations of mopeds < 50cc decreased to 213 in the period January-December 2025, compared to 690 in the same period of 2024, while registrations of motorcycles > 50cc increased by 14.5% to 4,467 in the period January-December 2025, compared to 3,903 in the same period of 2024.

According to the report, the main manufacturers of motor vehicles registered in Cyprus during 2025 were Japan (44.1%), Germany (13.0%), France (7.0%), the United Kingdom (6.0%), and South Korea (3.9%).

The most popular colour of vehicles registered in 2025 was white with a percentage of 34.4%, followed by gray (19.5%), black (15.6%), blue (8.8%), and silver (8.7%).

Annual increase of 27.1% in December

In December 2025, according to CySTAT, total motor vehicle registrations reached 3,604, an increase of 27.1% compared to 2,836 in December 2024.

Registrations of passenger saloon cars increased by 36.6% to 2,801 from 2,050 in December 2024.
