Nicosia lays groundwork for EU involvement in Cyprus issue

Nicosia is laying the groundwork, on a European and international level, to promote President Nikos Christodoulides’ proposal for a more active involvement of the EU in efforts to solve the Cyprus problem.

Diplomatic sources have told the Cyprus News Agency that Christodoulides’ aim is for his proposal to be implemented immediately after the elections in Turkey and Greece.

To this end, Nicosia is now preparing the ground to secure the support of the EU member states and institutions – particularly important countries like France and Germany, said the sources. He will be meeting French President Emmanuel Macron on the sidelines of the European Council later this month, while he has also been invited by his counterpart to visit Paris. The President also plans to pay an official visit to Berlin, and reach out to the UN and US as well, said the sources.
