In a world increasingly shaped by geopolitical conflict, artificial intelligence, climate change and rapidly evolving global challenges, the need for young people who can lead with vision, negotiate with confidence and think beyond borders has never been greater.
For hundreds of students across Cyprus, that journey begins not in a university lecture hall or government chamber, but at the Senior School Model United Nations (SSMUN) 2026.
Applications are now officially open for Organisers and Committee Chairs, offering ambitious students the opportunity to join the leadership team behind one of Cyprus' most prestigious student-led academic conferences. Applications remain open until Monday, 6 July.
More than an extracurricular activity, SSMUN is a platform that empowers young people to become leaders, diplomats, innovators and changemakers. Months before delegates arrive, a dedicated team of students work tirelessly behind the scenes to design, organise and deliver a conference that mirrors the workings of the United Nations while fostering leadership, collaboration and global awareness.
Entirely organised by students, for students, SSMUN stands as a remarkable example of what young people can accomplish when entrusted with genuine responsibility. From sponsorships and logistics to media, protocol, administration and committee management, every aspect of the conference is planned and delivered by its student leadership team.
Leading this year's conference is an accomplished Secretariat consisting of President Renee Strouthou, Vice President Philippos Carneiro Leão, Head of Protocol Maya Angelidou, Secretary-General Michela Constantinou, Co-Head Organisers Nicole Pitsillides and Evelina Vassiliou, Head of Admin Achilleas Antoniades, and Head of Media Romy Gold. Together with dozens of organisers and committee chairs, they are responsible for delivering an international-standard conference that inspires the next generation of leaders.
Taking place on 21–22 November 2026 at The Senior School, Nicosia, SSMUN will once again welcome secondary school students aged 14 to 19 from across Cyprus for two days of diplomacy, debate and international cooperation.
More Than a Conference
Model United Nations (MUN) is recognised worldwide as one of the most prestigious educational simulations available to secondary school and university students. Participants step into the role of ambassadors representing countries within the United Nations, researching international policy, negotiating with fellow delegates and proposing solutions to some of the world's most complex challenges.
Yet SSMUN is far more than a simulation.
It is a place where confidence is built, friendships are formed, ideas are challenged and future leaders discover their voice. Students learn to speak with conviction, negotiate respectfully, analyse critically and collaborate effectively; skills that remain invaluable long after the conference concludes.
Every speech delivered, every alliance negotiated and every resolution drafted reflects the realities of international diplomacy, giving participants an authentic insight into how global decisions are made while encouraging them to become informed, responsible and engaged global citizens.
This year's conference embraces the timely theme:
"A World Divided: Power vs. Principles"
At a time when international politics is increasingly defined by conflict, technological transformation and competing national interests, SSMUN 2026 challenges delegates to confront one of the defining questions of our generation:
Can the international community protect peace, justice and human rights while navigating an increasingly divided world?
Delegates will debate issues that dominate today's global agenda, including nuclear security, artificial intelligence, climate migration, freedom of expression, peacekeeping operations, equitable access to education, women's healthcare and crisis management, encouraging participants to think critically, negotiate diplomatically and develop practical policy solutions.
Leadership Beyond the Classroom
For those applying as Organisers or Committee Chairs, SSMUN offers far more than a title.
Successful applicants become part of a leadership team responsible for organising every aspect of the conference, gaining first-hand experience in project management, event planning, sponsorship acquisition, public relations, budgeting, logistics, diplomacy and teamwork.
These are experiences rarely available at secondary-school level and are highly valued by universities and future employers alike.
Whether aspiring to careers in law, politics, international relations, economics, journalism, business or public service, students leave SSMUN with skills, confidence and experiences that extend far beyond the classroom.
As preparations for SSMUN 2026 continue, the Secretariat now invites motivated students to step forward, not simply as participants, but as the leaders who will shape this year's conference from the very beginning.
Applications for Organisers and Committee Chairs close on Sunday, 6 July.
For students ready to challenge themselves, lead with purpose and become part of one of Cyprus' most dynamic student initiatives, SSMUN 2026 offers an opportunity unlike any other.
