President expresses support for sustainable development of mountainous regions

The sustainable development and the repopulation of the mountainous regions are among the goals of the state regarding the countryside, said the President of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, while inaugurating the square of Korakou village, in Nicosia district.

The President noted that with regard to the mountainous areas, the government is acting on the basis of a strategic plan that will create the prospects for economic and social development of the countryside.

He said that at the beginning of 2024, revised plans and targeted actions are expected to be announced, such as the second phase of the Denia - Astromeritis road, children, and health-related infrastructure. Speaking on 5 November, he also referred to the recent decision to subsidise heating oil from 15 November.

"Our mountainous areas are becoming more competitive, more attractive, sustainable and citizen-friendly", the President further said, emphasising the importance of squares in small communities, as spaces for social gathering and interaction of residents, meeting places for youth, spaces for developing social relationships and activities.
