UAE Minister 'expresses interest over EastMed and natural gas infrastructure'

A United Arab Emirates Minister has expressed particular interest in the EastMed, the interconnection between Cyprus, Greece, and Israel, as well as the necessary infrastructure for the import of natural gas from gas fields in the region to Cyprus, an official press release has said.

Cypriot Minister of Energy, Commerce, and Industry George Papanastasiou met with UAE’s Minister of Investment and CEO of Abu Dhabi’s Developmental Holding Company Mohammed Hassan Al Suawidi on the sidelines of an energy fair and conference ADIPEC 2023 taking place in Abu Dhabi.

According to the press release, the two Ministers discussed various sectors of the Cypriot economy that could attract investments from the UAE with emphasis on energy.

The Emirati Minister expressed particular interest in the project of the interconnection of Cyprus, Greece, and Israel as well as the infrastructure Cyprus is proposing for the import of natural gas from gas fields in the Eastern Mediterranean for exports and electricity generation.

This infrastructure concerns the construction of a sub-sea natural gas pipeline, which could also transport hydrogen, and the construction of an LNG terminal of modular or floating technology, the release added.

The Cypriot Minister returns to Cyprus on 5 October.
