Head of Larnaca Chamber to seek Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry helm

With the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s general assembly due to take place on 4 December in the presence of President Nikos Christodoulides, potential new president have begun to throw their hat into the ring.

More specifically, the President of Larnaca’s Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Stavros Stavrou, in a recent interview with InBusinessNews, revealed his intention to run.

The upcoming electoral general assembly is of special interest, since after two successful terms as president of the CCCI over the past six years, the current President of the Chamber, Christodoulos Angastiniotis, cannot run for re-election in line with the Chamber’s regulations.

The next President of the Chamber will be called upon to shoulder a burden that is anticipated to be particularly heavy since, along with continuing Angastiniotis’ legacy, he or she will at the helm at a time full of challenges for the business world, and the wider economy.

As far as the nominations are concerned, apart from the president of the Larnaca Chamber Stavros Stavrou, who has publicly announced and for all intents and purposes "locked-in" his candidacy, InBusinessNews sources indicate that two more Chamber executives have, in one way or another, show interest, without however - at least so far - their candidacies being confirmed, which is why they are not being named here.

The assessment that is being made in this regard in view of the electoral general assembly this December, is that there may be up to three contenders for the presidency of the KEBE, but without excluding the scenario that it may not be necessary to hold elections in the end.

On the process itself, it is worth noting that the electoral body consists of 105 electors, from the five local Chambers. Specifically, 24 members from Nicosia, 21 from Limassol, 20 from Famagusta, 20 from Paphos and 20 from Larnaca.

It is recalled that the outgoing President Christodoulos Angastiniotis first took the helm of the CCCI in 2017, when he was elected for the first time unopposed, while in November 2020 he was again re-elected unopposed.

"The institution of the Chamber is optional and implies a lot of selfless offering to the state, businesses, and also the workers. I am particularly proud of what we have achieved as the CCCI," Angastiniotis said in an interview with InBusinessNews, published last February.
